In Jacobina and other surrounding cities it’s getting close to election day. I don’t really know much about how it works, but I do know that there is a lot of music involved. If you are running for Mayor of the city, you make a song and it is played all over the place. Most people running hire a car to drive around the city and play their song while driving through the neighborhood. These songs are parody’s of popular songs you’ll find on the radio here.
In Jacobina there is a Doctor named Rui running for Mayor. His song is ‘Eu quero Rui’, or ‘I want Rui’, a parody of ‘Quiero Tchu Tchá Tchá’. A song about a sensual dance. Just imagine Obama hiring someone to turn the lyrics from ‘Young, Wild and Free‘ into something like ‘Vote for me’.
Last weekend I went with some of my friends to the city of Juazeiro to celebrate my birthday. On our way home we passed an election party in the street. I got out my iPhone to take some footage for you. It’s not the best, but I hope it gives you an idea of what it’s like.
