A weekend at the roça

Saturday morning my friend Maiane and I went to the roça to visit her family there (they are related to my brothers wife as well, so I feel like they are my family too). It’s out in the country and it’s not a tourist destination. I don’t think many Americans have ever been. For me going to the roça is like going camping. There is no running water, and that means no bathroom. Everyone has a well of some sort and you use that water to shower etc. The stoves are wood burning, and everyone raises their own livestock. That means the food is extra good. The houses are few and far between and at night you can see every star in the sky. I don’t think I have ever seen the night sky like that. The roça is my favorite place in Brazil to take photos. For some reason the light there is always perfect and the people are always friendly.

Erin, your photography is really unbelievable. You should enter some in contests. You captured the feeling and light in a gorgeous way. I’m not just saying that because you’re my best friend, it’s the honest truth. They look professional. Submit some the next time the LA Times has a photo contest. You have a great “shot” at winning! Nice job!
